This case describes the Avenues project first published in February 2020. It documents that engagement, rather than the school’s current website or technology choices.
Why Avenues replaced WordPress
Avenues: The World School needed a multilingual website for a school with campuses in several countries. Its previous WordPress site was more than six years old, and maintenance had become complicated.
The website team wanted a redesign that would work well on mobile, keep development manageable, and provide a CMS that supported its language requirements. Performance was one consideration. The longer-term cost and effort of maintaining the site also shaped the decision.
The platform and publishing model
We used Gatsby for the frontend, Storyblok for content management, and Netlify for hosting and deployment, with Buddy involved in the delivery workflow.
Separating content from presentation gave the team a way to manage content in the CMS while developers maintained the frontend components. Storyblok’s component model let us connect editorial choices to the page structures built for the site.
What required care
The design called for highly customizable components within strict visual guidelines. Building that flexibility with styled-components required care. A component could support several page designs, but its implementation still had to remain understandable and perform well.
The project also had deployment requirements connected to the school’s international presence. Gatsby and Buddy integration formed part of that work.
What the client reported
The original case describes a more manageable publishing and maintenance setup. It also records interest in reusing content for campus lobby screens. That was a possible next use of the separated content layer, not a delivered feature claimed here.
